The Ruam Chart Pattana Party and the main faction in the Puea Pandin Party have agreed to merge into a single party called Chart Pattana Puea Pandin.
The so-called "Three Ps" faction in Puea Pandin is led by veteran politicians Phinij Jarusombat, Pairoj Suwannachawee and Preecha Laohapongchana.
Mr Phinij said Wannarat Channukul, leader of Ruam Chart Pattana, would lead the new party with Charnchai Chairungruang, leader of Puea Pandin, taking the post of chief adviser of the new party.
The new party secretary-general would be appointed later.
Prachern Tiyapanjanit, director of Ruam Chart Pattana, said the merger has been agreed in principle and it would be announced tomorrow.
Alongkorn Maneekas, Puea Pandin spokesman, said details of the merger would be given tomorrow. Key policies of the two parties may be combined.
The spokesman said it was agreed the new party's label should retain both parties' names because they are familiar to the public.
Coming up with an entirely different name would cause confusion for voters in the next election expected in June.
Currently, Ruam Chart Pattana has 10 MPs. The Three Ps group comprises about 15 MPs.
