Former interior minister Purachai Piumsombun, who was earlier tipped to lead the Pracha Santi Party, has registered a new political party called Rak Santi.

Former Bangkok senator Seree Suwannapanon, the interim leader of Pracha Santi, said Mr Purachai had withdrawn his nomination for the party leadership by registering Rak Santi (Love Peace) with the Election Commission.

Pracha Santi (People for Peace) is promoting itself as an alternative party.

Mr Purachai will today officially introduce himself as leader of Rak Santi, Mr Seree said.

He added that the Pracha Santi Party would field its candidates in the upcoming general election as it has carried out political activities and has registered more than 5,000 members.

Mr Seree said he had not yet decided whether to contest the election but he would not abandon his party to join Mr Purachai's party.

Noppadol Inna, Mr Purachai's close aide, said Mr Purachai had been approached to lead Pracha Santi but had not decided whether to accept the invitation.

He said Mr Purachai had never been a member of Pracha Santi.

Mr Purachai's supporters wanted him to set up his own party instead of taking over the leadership of another party, Mr Noppadol said.Mr Noppadol said he was confident Rak Santi would be able to register at least 5,000 members and set up at least one branch in each region, as legally required for establishing a new political party. Rak Santi has 15 co-founders.

Mr Purachai's trademark honesty earned him the title "Mr Clean" in the first Thaksin Shinawatra government.
